FDA approved drug being studied for use in prevention of brain injury and seizures in infants.

Topiramate, an FDA approved drug, is being tested by Children’s Hospital Boston for it’s effectiveness as a protective therapy for babies who have a traumatic birth. Traumatic births can affect baby’s brain blood and oxygen supply (hypoxia-ischemia) and thus cause long-term neurological abnormalities. The drug is currently used to treat seizures in those over three but has not been tested for safety on infants.
