A recent outbreak of Cryptosporidiosis has prompted health officials to encourage people to be more aware of washing their hands frequently. Cryptosporidia is a parasite that causes diarrhea, stomach pains and nausea for 1-2 weeks and is easily spread from animals to humans, and humans to humans, and in swimming pools. It is transmissible 2 weeks after symptoms stop and is preventable with good hand washing technique and avoiding known sources. Children should be kept home from school while contagious and food handlers must take time off work.
