Heart failure and thiamine deficiency link
30% of patients with heart failure were found to have low levels of thiamine (vitamin B1) according to a study conducted on people who were hospitalized with congestive heart failure. Scientists believe that the thiamine deficient state is induced by heart failure and is not a side effect of medications; therefore a vitamin supplement could reverse the deficiency. Vitamin B1 is derived solely from the diet and is not stored in the body. Medical experts also believe that global vitamin and mineral deficiencies would be experienced by people with late stage heart failure, as they develop cardiac cahexia, or very low body weight.
