High blood pressure may cause brain lesions similar to those seen in dementia and stroke patients

Researchers in the Netherlands have found an association between fluctuations in blood pressure and brain lesions similar to those seen in stroke or dementia patients. Treated but uncontrolled high blood pressure was associated with the most severe lesions. Treated or successfully controlled blood pressure had similar brain lesions. High blood pressure needs to be better managed in order to prevent increasing prevalence of dementia.
