HIV incidence increasingly rapidly in the UK with many cases undiagnosed
The UK Health Protection Agency has reported that more than a quarter of HIV cases are undiagnosed and that at the end of 2003 there were about 57,000 cases of HIV in the UK. This means that there are about 14,500 people with undiagnosed HIV. This is catastrophic as people are infecting others unknowingly and leading to escalating incidence of the disease. There were 7,000 new cases diagnosed (58% were heterosexuals) in 2003 which is the highest figure so far. Two thirds of all heterosexual diagnoses were women. The government is aiming to better educated the younger population of the reality of sexually transmitted diseases.
