Hormone therapy associated with increased risk of ovarian cancer

About 25,000 new cases of ovarian cancer are diagnosed annually in the US. It is frequently undiagnosed until it has spread. The lifetime risk for developing the disease is % and risk factors include a family history of the condition, age, obesity, history of breast cancer and hormone replacement therapy. A new report in the Archives of Internal Medicine claims that oral hormone therapy does increase the risk of ovarian cancer in women who have not had a hysterectomy. It is the estrogen component of the hormone therapy that increases the risk and not the progesterone component. It was also found that the risk was associated with the cumulative oral estrogen intake and not the length of time the hormone therapy has been taken. Thus, it is advisable to aim to reduce daily estrogen intake as much as possible in order to reduce the risk of ovarian cancer.
