Methicillin-resistant strains of a superbug, known as staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), or Golden Staph, have previously been isolated to hospital settings, however 3 children have died in one report from infection by this organism after acquiring it in the community. The 3 infants were admitted to hospital with pneumonia-type symptoms in separate incidences where they later died from toxic shock syndrome due to the bacterial infection. MRSA causes other conditions, including wound infections, necrotizing fasciitis, and pneumonia. It is becoming more prevalent in community settings, stimulating an increasing concern for further evolving resistant bacteria and its treatment.
