Treatment of prostate cancer traditionally involves the inhibition of testosterone which can fuel cancer growth. The down side of this treatment is that it increases the risk of osteoporosis in long term survivors. However, researchers have found that treating advanced prostate cancer with HRT (hormone replacement therapy) patches. These patches contain estrogen which inhibits testosterone production but the treatment also reduces the risk of osteoporosis and may even increase bone density. The negative side of using HRT is that men may have to put up with breast growth. Further, larger studies are being planned.
