Hysterectomies can cause sexual dysfunction

1,450 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year in Canada with 420 of these dying. Radical hysterectomy to remove cervical cancer or endometrial cancer leaves 40% of patients with sexual dysfunction. A study is being conducted to assess the benefits of psychological counseling, exercises and information in restoring sexual health. Medication such as Viagra (sildenafil) was also utilized. Hysterectomies often result in reduced elasticity of the vaginal wall and damage to the genital autonomic nerves which provide sensation. Psychological effects may include depression and issues with their body. Fear of recurrence is also an issue.
