Insulin resistance, a predictor of type 2 diabetes

Insulin resistance is a precursor for diabetes and can precede the onset of symptoms of type 2 diabetes up to 20 years. Scientists have localized the problem to involve the 'powerhouse' structure of a cell, called the mitochondria. The mitochondria contribute to the conversion of fats and sugars into energy for the body, which is a key defective component in diabetes. The resultant excess fats and sugars in the blood leads to diabetic complications of blindness, kidney disease and failure, amputation of limbs and cardiovascular disease.
