Magnesium has a preventative effect on type 2 diabetes

Even after adjusting for other possible contributing factors, researchers were able to establish that people who consumed the highest level of magnesium which is found in foods such as nuts, grains and leafy green vegetables, were the least likely to develop type 2 diabetes. This effect was noticed in men and women who participated in the study involving around 130,000 subjects. A second study involved 39,000 women who had no history of diabetes, heart disease or cancer. Again, those who had the highest magnesium intake had the least likelihood of developing diabetes. Obesity did play a role in the correlation but only in those with a BMI over 25. Magnesium tended to have a greater preventative effect in those who were obese.
