Medication and hypertension

High blood pressure influences a persons risk for suffering a heart attack, stroke or kidney failure, thereby taking anti-hypertensives, the risk should and is reduced as is the risk of death from these conditions. With a third of the adult American population suffering from hypertension, medications for lowering blood pressure are a booming industry, with diuretics (water pills) the cheapest effect anti-hypertensive drug available. However, these are often used in combination with other anti-hypertensives, some of which have an increased risk of adverse effects. Lisinopril is an ACE inhibitor, an effective antihypertensive particularly for diabetics as it protects the kidneys, and also substantially decreases the risk of suffering from cardiac failure, a heart attack, or fatal cardiac disease. It can also cause drug reactions such as airway swelling that makes it difficult for the patient to breathe. Another problem with taking antihypertensives is compliance of the patient to taking their medications, as it is sometimes not enforced that these are lifelong medicines.
