Men and osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a demineralizing condition of the bone that affects predominantly elderly people, and is often not adequately appreciated in the male population. Osteoporosis causes the bones to become more porous and liable to break, and in men is influenced by alcohol use, smoking, medications and decreasing testosterone (the 'male menopause'). Studies have shown that while men are less susceptible to developing osteoporosis, they are more likely to suffer mortality due to a hip fracture after a year than women, and are less likely to be prescribed bone strengthening medications. Death secondary to a hip fracture can be due to pre-existing cardiovascular disease, infection and blood dysfunction. Preventative strategies for broken bones can be with resistance exercises, and calcium and vitamin D supplements.
