The Metabolic syndrome, or Syndrome X currently affects 1 in 4 Americans and is a combination of symptoms and illnesses that are becoming more prevalent in today's society due to our sedentary lifestyle and high energy, large portion diet. The conditions include high fats in the blood (dyslipidemia), insulin resistance, obesity, high blood pressure (hypertension), reflux disease, and sleep apnea. It affects members of affluent societies at any age, including children, leading to early onset of cardiovascular complications such as angina, heart attacks, heart disease and stroke. Syndrome X can be treated with a healthy, low fat diet and regular exercise to achieve a healthy weight range, which should reverse many of the conditions. The risk of putting off these preventative strategies includes open heart surgery for coronary artery bypass, and dialysis for kidney failure.
