Micropenis may be corrected by surgery
A micropenis is only 7cm long compared to the average length of 12.5cm. The condition may be caused by insufficient testosterone during 2nd and 3rd trimester of fetal growth, genetic make-up or androgen insensitivity. Phalloplasty is a surgical treatment for micropenis problems and involves using skin from the forearm to shape a longer penis. An inflatable prosthesis allows an erection. The operation was performed on 9 men and all were happy with the cosmetic appearance with 4 being able to urinate standing up and 4 being capable of normal sexual intercourse. Some of the patients developed multiple complication sue as infection or movement in the position of the cylinder which required further operation. Although the procedure has a high rate of complications, it does provide significant improvements in quality of life and self esteem.
