Naturally occurring gas causing 20,000 lung cancer deaths in Europe

Researchers report that one in ten lung cancers in Europe are caused by natural radioactive gas (radon gas produced by certain rocks such as granite) the comes through the earth's surface and accumulates in closed in areas such as homes. Smokers were especially prone to this risk. This gas is estimate to cause 20,000 lung cancer deaths each year in Europe. They estimate that radon gas caused 9% of deaths from lung cancer in Europe and 2% of all deaths from cancer. Estimated 100,000 homes have excess build up of the gas. Systems can be added to homes to prevent radon gas build up.
