Necrotizing Fasciitis destroying lives
Necrotizing fasciitis is a bacterial infection of the layer of tissue that covers muscle, and superficial tissues which results in their destruction and can lead to death. Necrotizing fasciitis normally requires a preceding event such as trauma or surgery to allow the bacteria entry to the susceptible flesh. It can also make the sufferer experience a flu-type illness, which often leads to misdiagnosis. Necrotizing fasciitis is diagnosed clinically and with cultures taken from the wound. A CT scan can given information as to how extensive the damage is, and complications can include extensive scarring, amputation, malnutrition, hypoproteinemia, and anemia. Treatment includes wound debridement, nursing wound care, and intravenous antibiotics.
