New breakthrough in spinal cord injury recovery

Spinal cord nerve damage prevents brain signals reaching muscles which causes paralysis. As a result, the body manufactures molecules in the scar tissue that blocks nerve regeneration in order to prevent infections. Scientists developed enzymes that remove the blocking molecules, thus allowing some degree of nerve fiber regeneration. Thus researchers hope that spinal cord injury victims may be able to regain some muscle function.
