New non-invasive treatment for fibroids
A new, non-invasive procedure for treating uterine fibroids, benign growths in the wall of the uterus, has been released on the market. Fibroids cause heavy bleeding during periods, abdominal cramping and heaviness in the pelvic region and primarily affect 1:5 women of childrearing age. Uterine artery embolization, fibroidectomy (removal of the fibroids), and hysterectomy have been optional procedures to date. Flostat transvaginal clamp is now a viable option. The clamp is designed to be inserted into the uterus via the vagina and with the aid of ultrasound, is closed down occluding the uterine arteries for 6 hours. When the clamp is released the fibroids have been starved of oxygen and nutrients, and therefore perish, resulting in a decrease in symptoms.
