A woman diagnosed with a cancerous tumor on her right vocal chord opted to try a new treatment rather than the traditional 7 weeks of radiation which carried the risk of affecting her voice. The new procedure carried a lower risk of voice problems and involved using a laser to remove the tumor. Cryosurgery was then used to freeze any remaining tissue. The freezing process produces softer scar tissue and is thus less likely to affect the voice quality. The main risk factors of throat cancer are smoking and alcohol abuse.
