Researchers from the University of Michigan Health System have concluded from their studies that people with early symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome can improve their discomfort by night-time splinting. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a work-related disorder which is the prime cause of workplace impairment and disability and lost work time. The range of available treatments for carpal tunnel syndrome includes wrist splints, changes in hand activity, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, diuretics and steroid injections. Very little research has been done to determine the most effective treatment for this frequently misdiagnosed condition. Night-time splinting is often the first option offered as it reduces the stress on the limb during the night. If the splint is worn during the day, it may actually cause more stress on the limb as the limb will often need to be active. Automotive assembly workers face a 5-10 times greater risk of carpal tunnel syndrome than the general population. Symptoms include numbness, tingling, burning or pain in the median nerve of the hand. Symptoms need to be present for at least a week or more than three times in the preceding six months. In the study, the splinted group showed a significant improvement in their symptoms with some reporting complete relief. The improvement was generally dependent on the amount of damage done. The key to the success of the treatment is early diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome and treatment.
