Nutrition is a vital element in fighting mesothelioma

Mesothelioma sufferers are often advised to follow a certain diet to counteract the effects of chemotherapy or certain medications. Patients need to eat well in order to keep their body as healthy as possible. If they lose too much weight, their body won't cope with treatment as well. Side effects of some mesothelioma treatments include nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, altered sense of smell, altered sense of taste and constipation. A cancer diet is often high in protein in order to promote tissue repair following surgery, chemotherapy or radiation. It also strengthens the immune system. Fats are also needed to provide energy during treatment. Hydration with water is an essential part of the cancer diet also. Individual patients will need individual diets to account for differences in age, sex, weight and treatment. Mesothelioma usually develops 15 to 45 years after exposure and initial symptoms include chest pain followed by shortness of breath. Life expectancy after diagnosis is usually 12 to 24 years.
