Occupational asthma occurs in about 15% of adult asthmatics which equates to about 1 million Americans. 65,000 adults in the US will be diagnosed with occupational lung disease each year and 25,000 people will die. It is the leading cause of work-related illness in the US. Occupational lung diseases include: asbestosis - asbestos related, berylliosis - caused by beryllium inhalation which is used in aerospace industry and fluorescent light bulbs, byssinosis - inhalation of hemp, flax or cotton dust in the textile industry, coal worker's pneumoconiosis - inhalation of coal dust and silicosis - inhalation of silica used in foundry work, pottery, glass making, ceramics, sandblasters and quarry workers. Occupational lung diseases are generally incurable but they are preventable.
