Periodontal disease (gum disease) is caused by a bacterial infection due to poor oral hygiene, i.e. not brushing your teeth, and not only results in loss of teeth, but can lead to cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, diabetes, respiratory conditions and premature labor. These diseases also conversely increase the sufferers risk of gum disease. Changes in the health and appearance of gums can be a sign of other disorders affecting the body, including leukemia, diabetes and AIDS. Medical experts recommend regular brushing and flossing in between meals, quitting smoking, and routine visits to the dentist. Periodontal disease can be treated with antibiotics.
