A study published in General Dentistry reports that diabetics with poor blood sugar level control are more prone to oral health problems such as dry mouth, periodontal (gum) disease, oral infections, cavities and slow wound healing. Dry mouth in diabetics can be alleviated by increasing water consumption, chewing sugar free gum and having regular dental visits. Periodontal disease can be alleviated by regular dental visits, good blood sugar control and good diet. Dentists may prescribe antibiotics for slow healing mouth sores or gum disease.
