Smoking is the main cause of lung cancer which is diagnosed each year in 900,000 men and 380,000 women worldwide. Smoking can also increase the risk of stomach, liver, kidney and cervical cancer. A recent study has linked children's exposure to second hand smoke to increased risk of lung cancer in adulthood. Researchers claim that passive smoking increases the risk by 50%. Of 123,000 subjects exposed to passive smoking while they were young, 97 developed lung cancer, 20 developed upper respiratory cancer and 14 died from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
