Dysmenorrhea refers to pain experienced around the time of menstruation due to excess prostaglandins that cause the endometrium (lining of the uterus) to be shed. Cramping is caused by the uterus contracting and decreasing blood flow to the womb resulting in pain. Other symptoms include headaches, tender breasts, nausea, fatigue and diarrhea. Pain relief is in the form of paracetamol, application of warmth to the area via baths or water bottles, and in certain cases, the oral contraceptive pill can be used. Endometriosis is another cause of dysmenorrhea and pain during or after sex, and also causes infertility, where the endometrium is found outside the uterus anywhere in the abdomen. Analgesics and oral contraceptive pill can be helpful, but occasionally surgery is recommended to relieve pain.
