Colic has been recently defined by researchers to be the point at which parents can no longer stand their child crying. This definition was identified when a study found that mothers with postnatal depression tended to have "colicky" babies, or rather, babies that would not settle. Post partum depression affects the mother a few weeks after delivering a baby and can have a greater impact when their social supports are absent, they have low self esteem, the family unit is disrupted and parenting is one sided. The future for babies with mothers that do not have their depression treated run the risk of never being able to form loving relationships.
