Early warning signs for the development of meningitis and sepsis (blood poisoning) have been discovered by medical experts who believe that lower limb pain, cold peripheries, and change in skin color are indicative of the serious illnesses. Classical symptoms of meningitis that apparently develop after these include, headache, neck stiffness, photophobia, non-blanching rash, and decreased consciousness. Bacterial meningitis is responsible for 5-10 deaths out of every 100 meningitis patients, which normally occurs within 24-48 hours of symptoms appearing. Those who do survive can be left with deafness, amputations, and brain damage. The specialists argue that a change in attitude to diagnosis of meningitis needs to occur to include the non-specific earlier symptoms, allowing earlier intervention with antibiotics.
