Male HIV sufferers who take highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) for greater than two years have been found to be at high risk of increased blood pressure leading to heart attacks and strokes. Increased blood sugar and lipid levels have also been reported. HAART improves the wellbeing of HIV-positive people by decreasing the replication rate of the virus, resulting in better health and prolongation of life. Researchers encourage those who are on long-term HAART to be aware of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease risk factors such as hypertension, smoking, obesity and sedentary lifestyle. Blood pressure, particularly the systolic value, is an easy measurement to predict heart disease and stroke.
