Rabies is the 10th leading cause of death from human infections worldwide. By the time, symptoms present themselves, the disease is fatal. The highest rabies prevalence is in Asia where 30,000 people die annually in India and an estimated 2,000 to 5,000 people die annually in Pakistan. Rabies occurs most frequently in children aged 5 to 15. Vaccination can prevent rabies but it is believed to have a significant rate of adverse affects such as neurological complications. A safer vaccine is being developed. Rabies often goes undiagnosed and untreated and many countries poorly monitor dog bites and rabies.
