Radiation seed therapy a new option of prostate cancer treatment
A new treatment for prostate cancer has been successfully trialed. It involves implanting a radioactive seed (cesium-131 brachyterapy implant seed) into the cancer. It has a much shorter half life than previous seeds and thus delivers higher radiation doses in a shorter amount of time which improves efficacy and reduces treatment time. The implant procedure is also noninvasive and the patient only takes several days to return to normal activities. The shorter treatment time may reduce side effects like incontinence, urinary urgency or pain and erectile function. The current treatment choices available for men with prostate cancer is surgery, external beam radiation and implanted seed radiation.
