The risk of erectile dysfunction increases in men who have had a kidney transplant because of circulation problems, medications, psychological stress associated with living with a chronic disease and hormonal abnormalities such as diabetes. Diabetes and peripheral neuropathy were the most significant factors in incidence of ED following a kidney transplant. Of the study group, 36% had ED to start with but 44% of the whole group noticed improved sexual functioning following a kidney transplant. 12% of the group said their sexual functioning deteriorated after the transplant and the rest found no difference.
