University of Otago researchers were surprised and impressed by the results of a study on the Atkins diet. The found it a very effective short-term method of weight loss with minimal side effects for most. They found the in the short-term the high fat diet did not increase cholesterol levels but a quarter of the subjects did have an increase in levels of bad cholesterol. Detractors for the diet claim that it increases the risk of bowel and cardiovascular disease whereas those supporting the diet claim that it reduces the risk of diabetes and heart disease. The researchers believe that the Atkins diet may be a good short term solution to weight loss for some people.
