A recent study by the Virginia Commonwealth University investigated the relationship between women's menstrual cycle and depression. They found that 64% of the 433 subjects had deterioration in depression symptoms 5-10 days before menstruation. These subjects had their depressive cycle continue longer (30.7 months) than women who's depression was unaffected by their menstrual cycle (13.5 months). They also tended to be older and have poorer general health. Physicians need to be aware of the relationship between depression and menstrual cycle in order to better monitor the effects of medication.
