Canadian researchers report that the risk of postnatal or postpartum depression increases in women who are recent immigrants, have little or no support or have pregnancy-related high blood pressure. A study involving 500 mothers found that 30% had depression symptoms one week after delivery and 20% after 8 weeks. It is important to provide new mothers with support straight after the delivery.
