Sleep apnea occurs mostly in men and can lead to heart problems, high blood pressure and weight gain. Sleep apnea can be a contributing factor to death if a person already has existing conditions such as lung problems or cardiac problems. Not all people who snore have sleep apnea but all sleep apnea sufferers snore. Snoring and breathing cessations can severely disrupt the quality of sleep. Other signs of sleep apnea include severe daytime fatigue, morning headaches and sometimes even frequent night-time urination. Lack of sleep can lead to irritability and mood disorders. People at most risk of the condition are obese males with large necks. The majority of the estimated 15 to 20 million sleep apnea sufferers are undiagnosed.
