Worldwide smoking deaths are on the increase claims a study in a recent issue of Tobacco Control. About 12% or 5 million deaths worldwide in 2000 were due to smoking are the results of one study. Over 50% of the deaths occurred in smokers aged 30 to 69. Most lung cancer deaths among nonsmokers were due to use of coal for cooking and heating in poorly ventilated houses. Smoking was also linked to numerous deaths from related causes such as throat cancer, COPD and cardiovascular disease. Men accounted for most of the smoking caused deaths and smoking killed roughly equal number of people in developed and undeveloped countries. Of the developing areas, China, India, South America and Eastern Europe had the fastest rising incidence of smoking related death.
