Stomach surgery may increase risk of laryngeal cancer

Gastric surgery involving whole or partial removal of the stomach appears to increase the risk of cancer of the larynx by four times. . Thus, people who have had stomach surgery need to maintain regular laryngeal examinations. This increased risk may be due to the reflux of intestinal juices irritating the larynx lining and hence causing cancer. A study found that 8% of people with laryngeal cancer had previously undergone stomach surgery whereas only 2% of the control group had laryngeal cancer.
