A world class rugby player suffered nephritic syndrome, a type of kidney disease that requires dialysis. He subsequently had a kidney transplant and now has a lifetime of using medications to prevent organ rejection, such as steroids (predisolone). A recent bone fracture questioned whether the sportsman was now suffering osteoporosis secondary to his long term dialysis treatment or his prolonged use of prednisolone. Fortunately, the injury was solely due to direct trauma as his bone density was normal. He also has protein malnutrition from his disease which causes muscle weakness and wasting. It is rare to return to professional sport after a kidney transplant.
