Valtrex may be used to treat shingles, genital herpes and cold sores

A prescription medication called Valtrex is taken once a day and can suppress further genital herpes outbreaks. Valtrex is an antiviral agent used against herpes zoster (shingles), genital herpes and herpes simplex (cold sores). The whole course needs to be completed to maintain full efficacy. Side effects include nausea, vomiting, headaches, loss of appetite, weakness, stomach pain or dizziness but they usually only last the first few days of treatment.
