Medical Research Breakthroughs and Obesity

Obese kids at risk of heart trouble: Researchers at the Ohio State University College of Medicine have found that childhood and adolescent obesity negatively impacts vascular endothelial function, which relates to cardiac health. The study was designed to investigate the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and endothelial function measured via VOP in 76 children and adolescents ages nine through 18. BMI is a number calculated from a person's weight and height and it provides a reliable indicator of the amount of body fat. It is known that healthy endothelium (a single cell layer that lines all blood vessels) is key to maintaining vascular health. Endothelial "dysfunction" is a primary contributor to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (the build-up of fatty deposits on the inside walls of arteries) in adults and is associated with increased risk of heart attacks, stroke, and congestive heart failure. Endothelial function can be measured non-invasively in children using venous occlusion plethysmography (VOP), a technique that measures responses of arm blood vessel responses to an inflatable cuff that externally halts and restarts blood flow. This method has been shown to correlate with coronary artery function in adults with heart disease.

Cure Research discussion for Obesity:

Genes and Disease by the National Center for Biotechnology (Excerpt)

The discovery of leptin has initiated a flurry of research into the molecular basis of weight control. A whole network of signals contributes to weight homeostasis, and other key players are being discovered on an ongoing basis. Mice have proved to be an extremely useful model for human obesity, and have helped to begin to unravel the components that contribute to maintaining body weight. Since the market for effective weight-reducing therapies is enormous, drug companies are working alongside basic scientists to find possible drug targets among the tangle of molecules that control body weight. Prescription Medications for the Treatment of Obesity: NIDDK (Excerpt)

Some antidepressant medications have been studied as appetite-suppressant medications. While these medications are FDA approved for the treatment of depression, their use in weight loss is an "off-label" use. Studies of these medications generally have found that patients lost modest amounts of weight for up to 6 months. However, most studies have found that patients who lost weight while taking antidepressant medications tended to regain weight while they were still on the drug treatment. Weight-loss and Nutrition Myths: NIDDK (Excerpt)

Research suggests that losing 1/2 to 2 pounds a week by eating better and exercising more is the best way to lose weight and keep it off . By improving your eating and exercise habits, you will develop a healthier lifestyle and control your weight. You will also reduce your chances of developing heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. (Source: excerpt from Weight-loss and Nutrition Myths: NIDDK)
