Glossary for Osteosarcoma

  • Arm conditions: Conditions that affect the arm
  • Bone cancer: Malignancy that occurs in the bone
  • Bone pain: Bone pain or tenderness is aching or other discomfort in one or more bones.
  • Bone swelling: A swelling of the bone
  • Chromosome 13q partial deletion: A rare chromosomal disorder where part of the long arm (q) of chromosome 13 is deleted resulting in various physical, neurological and developmental abnormalities. The type and severity of symptoms is determined by the amount and location of the deleted genetic material.
  • Knee conditions: Any condition that affects the knee
  • Li-Fraumeni syndrome: A rare inherited disorder characterized by tumor development by young adulthood.
  • Local swelling: The localized swelling of a body part
  • Lung cancer: Lung cancer is a disease of uncontrolled cell growth in tissues of the lung. This growth may lead to metastasis, which is the invasion of adjacent tissue and infiltration beyond the lungs. Most lung tumors are malignant.
  • Osteosarcoma: Osteosarcoma is the most common type of malignant bone cancer, accounting for 35% of primary bone malignancies. There is a preference for the metaphyseal region of tubular long bones. 50% of cases occur around the knee.
  • Paget's disease of bone: A chronic, slowly progressing bone disorder where the bone is destroyed rapidly and replaced by abnormal bone which is dense and fragile.
  • Paget's disease, type 1: A chronic, slowly progressing bone disorder where the bone is destroyed rapidly and replaced by abnormal bone which is dense and fragile. Type 1 is caused by a mutation on chromosome 6p21.3.
  • Paget's disease, type 4: A rare disorder involving pigmentation and vascular abnormalities. The lesions usually involve large areas of the body and the pigmentation color can include pink, bluish and brown.
  • Pain: A feeling of suffering, agony, distress caused by the stimulation of pain fibres in the nervous system
  • Pathological fracture: The occurrence of a fracture a bone of the body caused by a disease state
  • Sarcoma: A malignant carcinoma that is located in connective tissue
