Medical Research Breakthroughs and Ovarian Cancer

Ray of hope in Ovarian cancer: Yale scientists have reported that pre clinical studies show that the drug compound NV-128 can induce death of ovarian cancer cells which may be useful for maintaining remission in chemo-resistant ovarian cancer. It acts by halting the activation of a protein pathway called mTOR, which signals increase in tumour growth and may be associated with resistance to conventional therapies. Inhibition of mTOR therefore prevents these survival pathways such as the protection of the mitochondria of the cells. NV-128, is developed by Novogen Limited and its success is attributed to its novel approach to treatment, which is independent of enzymes known as caspases to trigger cell death, which were used in traditional therapies. The traditional therapies are ineffective in chemo-resistant cancer cells due to mutations that short-circuit signals that trigger cancer cell death. Thus NV-128 can truly be regarded as a ray of hope in treating patients with cancer recurrence.

So far, the best opportunity to reduce mortality is through early detection (general screening of the population for BRCA1 and BRCA2 is not yet recommended). However, new strategies to find anticancer drugs are constantly being developed. The latest, called "synthetic lethal screening" looks for new drug targets in organisms such as yeast and fruit flies. In the same way that studies in yeast recently helped to identify the functions of BRCA1 and BRCA2, it is thought that drugs that work in more primative organisms will also be applicable to humans.
