Summary Information: Ala of the Ilium

Ala of the Ilium: The ala is the large portion of the ilium of the bony pelvis. The ala of the ilium creates the lateral, or side, area of the bony pelvis. The ala of the ilium contains the iliac crest and provides attachments for some ligaments and origins for some muscles, including the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and gluteus minimus. Conditions that can afflict the ala of the ilium include Paget's disease of bone, arthritis, trauma, osteomyelitis, cancer, inflammation and fracture.
