Alveoli: The alveoli are tiny hollow sacs in the lungs and are outcroppings of the bronchioles. Alveoli are responsible for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood. Alveoli receive air mixed with oxygen from the outside through the organs of the respiratory system. Alveoli are wrapped by and interface with the capillaries from branches of the pulmonary artery and pulmonary vein to exchange gasses from the blood.
Conditions affecting the alveoli include infant respiratory distress syndrome, cystic fibrosis, emphysema, asthma, chronic bronchitis, trauma, cancer, and infection.
