Biliary System

Summary Information: Biliary System

Biliary System: The biliary system is a part of the digestive system and is located in the upper right side of the abdomen under the liver. The biliary system includes the gallbladder and the ducts from the liver and the gallbladder. The liver produces bile, which is transported through the biliary system into the small intestine to digest fats. Bile flows from the liver down the common hepatic duct into the gallbladder, which concentrates and stores the bile. When food is eaten, the gallbladder squeezes stored bile into the cystic duct and down the common bile duct through the Ampulla of Vater into the duodenum of the small intestine.

Conditions that afflict the biliary system include gallstones, cholangitis, cholecystitis, biliary cirrhosis and biliary duct cancer.
