First Metacarpal: The first metacarpal is located in the hand, forming a portion of the palm area. The first metacarpal articulates with the first proximal phalanx of the thumb and the trapezium in the wrist. The functions of the first metacarpal include creating structure for and supporting the movement of the hand, creating insertion points for muscles and ligaments, and storing some minerals, such as calcium and phosphorus.
Conditions that can afflict the first metacarpal include infection, trauma, fracture, arthritis, osteomyelitis and dislocations.
