Hippocampus : a layer of gray matter lying along the floor of the lateral ventricle of the brain, comprised of cholinergic and possibly glutamatergic fibers, believed to be the critical brain structure underlying learning and memory.

Hippocampus: The hippocampus is a paired structure in the brain located in the temporal lobe. The hippocampus is involved with memory and possibly spatial cognition. Spatial cognition is the ability to picture three dimensional images and memories and use them in functioning and navigation.
Conditions that can afflict the hippocampus include Alzheimer's disease, medial temporal lobe seizures, encephalitis, post-traumatic stress disorder, atrophy, head trauma, tumors, stroke, and infection.
