Ligament : A white fibrous band of connective tissue that connects two bones at a joint.
Ligament: The general term ligaments most often refers to fibrous cords of connective tissue that attach bones to each other and hold together the many types of joints in the body. These types of ligaments, called articular ligaments, are strong and also have a small amount of elasticity because their connective tissues consist of both collagen and elastic fibers. These ligaments stabilize joints and allow movement in only specific directions, which depend on the individual joint. The other types of structures that are referred to as ligaments are the fetal remnant ligaments and peritoneal ligaments.
Conditions that can directly or indirectly afflict the ligaments include anatomic defects, herniation, strains, sprains, ligament tears, arthritis, dislocations, and trauma.
